‘Giant’ Fatally Shot in Police Confrontation in Old Harbour, Jamaica
Old Harbour, St Catherine, Jamaica — A police operation in Old Harbour ended in a fatal shooting on Tuesday evening after officers reportedly exchanged gunfire with a man identified as 27-year-old Shane Clarke, also known as “Giant.”
The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. along Bowers Drive in the Colbeck area of Old Harbour, St Catherine. According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), officers from its Specialized Operations branch were conducting a targeted operation after receiving intelligence about a vehicle allegedly involved in the movement of illegal firearms. Police Account of the Incident
Police said they located a white Mercedes-Benz GLE and signalled the occupant to stop. According to the police account, the driver allegedly opened fire in the direction of the officers before speeding away.
A pursuit reportedly followed. Police said the vehicle stopped a short distance away, but when officers approached, the occupant allegedly opened fire again. The officers returned fire, which the JCF described as an act of self-defence. (Jamaica Gleaner)
The vehicle then reportedly sped away before crashing into an embankment and overturning.
Clarke was taken by police to May Pen Hospital in Clarendon, where he was pronounced dead.
Two Firearms Reportedly Recovered
Following the confrontation, investigators reportedly recovered two firearms from the scene.
The JCF said these included a black-and-silver .380 pistol containing one round of ammunition and an AK-47-type rifle with an empty magazine. The reported serial numbers on the weapons were not visible. No police officer was injured, although reports said a police service vehicle sustained gunshot damage. (Old Harbour News)
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Who Was ‘Giant’?
Shane Clarke, who was reportedly from Berrydale in Porus, Manchester, had been described by police sources as a person of interest in several serious criminal investigations.
Police have linked him to investigations involving alleged armed robberies, attacks involving cash-in-transit security teams, shootings and murders across several Jamaican parishes. Among the cases mentioned by police are the 2023 Jamaica National Bank robbery in Mandeville and several other serious crimes. (Old Harbour News)
It is important to note that being identified as a person of interest or being linked by police to an investigation does not mean a person was convicted of those offences.
Independent Investigation
The fatal shooting has also drawn the attention of Jamaica's Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
According to reports, INDECOM was notified and has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the police shooting. The independent investigation will be important in determining what happened during the confrontation and whether the use of deadly force was justified. (Old Harbour News)
There have also been reports of previous allegations made publicly by Clarke in which he claimed that members of the police force were targeting him. Those claims were made by Clarke himself and have not been independently established. They are separate from the police account of the shooting that resulted in his death. (Radamm)
A Community Left With Questions
The shooting caused significant activity in the area as police cordoned off the scene and investigators processed the location. The overturned Mercedes-Benz became a visible part of the aftermath as residents and motorists gathered nearby.
Clarke's death has raised questions about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation, the allegations previously made against him, and the police account that he fired at officers.
As the investigation continues, evidence from the scene, including the recovered firearms, the damaged vehicle, witness information and any available video footage, could help investigators establish a clearer picture of what happened.
For now, the death of Shane “Giant” Clarke remains the subject of an ongoing investigation, with authorities expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
